I started by understanding the problem properly — talking to real parents, looking at what already exists, and making sure this was worth building.

1.1 Problem Statement

The Problem I Wanted to Solve

The Problem: Parents who sleep-train their children (ages 0–3 years) struggle to dress them properly for nighttime sleep. The room temperature changes overnight, they can't go in to check without waking the baby, and the clothing rules are different depending on the child's age. This gets even harder when you have more than one child who each need different outfits for the same room temperature. Getting it wrong means the child is either too hot (which is a known risk factor for SIDS) or too cold (which means they wake up and the sleep training breaks down).

Why This Problem Matters

This isn't just about comfort — it's about baby safety. Overheating is one of the known risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and underdressing means the baby wakes up cold at 3am, breaking the sleep routine that took weeks to build.

The Core Tension

Here's what makes this problem tricky: I dress my child at 7pm, but the coldest point of the night is around 3–4am. The room temperature can drop by 3–5°C overnight depending on the weather, whether the heater is on, and how well the house is insulated. As a parent who sleep-trained my child, I can't just pop in at midnight to add a layer — that defeats the whole purpose.

Through my own experience and conversations with other parents, I identified three types of parents who face this problem. These aren't made up — they're based on real people in my life and in the parenting communities I'm part of.

How I Researched This

It Started as a Personal Problem

I didn't start this as a product exercise. I started it because I was the parent standing in front of the wardrobe at 18:45, holding a fussy baby, trying to figure out whether a 1.0 TOG or 2.5 TOG sleep sack was right for the night. It was autumn in Johannesburg — warm at bedtime, cold by 3am — and I never felt confident in my choice.

So I asked my "Clueless Parent" WhatsApp group — a group of parents I'd been texting with since pregnancy. Turns out, every single one of them had the same problem. Some were Googling TOG charts every night. Others were just guessing. One parent admitted they'd been keeping their baby in the same sleep sack all year because they didn't know how to adjust for the seasons.

That WhatsApp conversation became my first piece of research. The parents in that group became my first testers, my first feedback loop, and the reason I knew this problem was real before I wrote a single line of code.

What I Heard from Parents

The Bedtime Decision Loop

Through my research, I noticed the same stressful pattern coming up again and again — a 5-minute window (usually around 18:45–18:55) where a parent has to:

  1. Check the current room temperature (if they even have a thermometer)
  2. Open a weather app to guess how cold it'll get tonight
  3. Try to figure out how the outside weather affects the room
  4. Google or remember the TOG chart for their child's age
  5. For parents with more than one child — repeat this for each child
  6. Make a clothing decision while simultaneously managing the bedtime routine

This takes 3–5 minutes of mental energy at the worst possible time — when the parent is tired and the child is fussy. My app collapses all of this into one step: open app → see recommendation → dress your child → done.

Why I Believe These Numbers

Roughly 3.6 million children are born in the US each year alone, with similar numbers across the UK, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. The 0–3 age window means about 10–11 million US households are in my target group at any time. Research suggests 50–70% of parents in these markets try some form of sleep training, and this audience is very active on apps (Huckleberry has over 1 million downloads). My estimate of 200K reachable users in Year 1 is conservative — it assumes organic word-of-mouth through parenting groups with no paid advertising.

This Is a Daily-Use Product

This isn't a one-time lookup. Parents face this decision every single night for roughly 1,000 nights (from birth to about age 3). That kind of daily use is important — it means the app becomes part of the bedtime routine, not something people use once and forget about.

What My Research Told Me to Build

From everything I learned, five principles came out that guided every decision from here:

Decision: Move to Stage 2. My research confirmed this is a real, frequent, stressful problem with no adequate free solution. The gap in the market is clear, the audience is large enough, and the need is well-defined. I had enough confidence to move forward.
